Got a Dead Butt? How to Wake Up Your Glutes After Sitting Too Long

Verywell Health reported on how to avoid “dead butt syndrome” featuring insight from George Yusuff, MS, exercise physiologist at HSS.

“Gluteal amnesia, often referred to as ‘dead butt syndrome,' occurs when the gluteal muscles become inhibited and fail to activate effectively," said Yusuff.

To avoid dead butt syndrome, you should try not to pass long periods of time in a seated position. Yusuff recommended trying to stand up and move around regularly. “While this can be challenging with desk-based work, aiming to stand up and move at least once every hour, ideally every 30 minutes, can make a meaningful difference,” he said. “In addition, incorporating glute activation and strengthening exercises is critical for restoring proper function and improving strength in the glutes.”
