Good Day New York

Good Day New York interviewed Jordan D. Metzl, MD, sports medicine physician at HSS, who discussed the first set of guidelines he and his colleagues of the HSS Sports Medicine Institute published in HSS Journal for helping patients return to exercise safely after mild to moderate infection of COVID-19.

“As a sports medicine doctor I want people to exercise every single day. But if they had COVID, it’s important to stay in communication with your doctor, be a very good body listener and go slower than you normally would," explained Dr. Metzl. "Because some people can have problems with their heart and lungs and that’s part of the information we put in that article - giving people the information on how to know how to do that and to take a stepwise and slow approach to getting back to activity."

When returning to gym facilities, Dr. Metzl underscored the importance of following protocols and being aware of others around you. “Masks, handwashing and social distancing are all really important things in the gym. If you’re going, make sure to look out and see what’s happening around you. Make sure that people are following the rules. In this instance, you’re not only being accountable for yourself but for the people around you. If one person is not following the rules it can have very bad implications for everybody else.”

This segment aired during the 8am news hour on September 4, 2020.
