A new study led by researchers at HSS has found that fresh osteochondral allograft transplantation can be a reliable treatment for osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the knee.

The study, published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, followed 58 patients who underwent the procedure. At a minimum 2-year follow-up, 93% of patients had successful outcomes, with significant improvements in pain, function, and quality of life.

"Our findings suggest that fresh osteochondral allografts can help restore articular cartilage and allow patients to return to their desired level of activity," said lead author Dan A. Zlotolow, MD, hand and upper extremity surgeon at HSS.

The researchers plan to continue monitoring the long-term outcomes of this procedure for managing OCD lesions in the knee.
