Recent HSS research presented at the Joint European Bone & Joint Infection Society-Musculoskeletal Infection Society Conference (EBJIS-MSIS) found extended oral antibiotic therapy may not reduce the risk for subsequent infection after two-stage reimplantation for total knee arthroplasty.

In a conversation with Healio, Billy I. Kim, MD, orthopedic surgery resident shared, “Future studies or the next steps would be to see if there are selective cohorts or patients who are at higher risk who may benefit from antibiotics.” 

“Be cautious about giving everyone antibiotics because there are risks that come with it. Not just the adverse events like gastrointestinal complications or kidney injuries, but subsequent infections afterward if there are systemic effects that make it a worse infection,” said Dr. Kim.
