In an interview with USA Today, Tony Wanich, MD, sports medicine surgeon at HSS, shared insight on Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jalen Williams’ hamstring strain, which he sustained during the team’s Game 2 win over the Phoenix Suns. 

According to Dr. Wanich, Williams is reportedly dealing with a Grade 1 hamstring strain, which is encouraging and could allow for a return as soon as two weeks. However, Dr. Wanich noted that while the grade of the strain is important, other factors, including the location of the injury and the specific tissue involved, such as muscle, tendon, or the muscle‑tendon junction, can significantly influence the recovery timeline.

Dr. Wanich added that Williams’ minutes and workload will likely be monitored closely, with input from the team’s training staff. He noted that during the playoffs, players and coaches often push the limits, underscoring the balance teams must strike between performance and injury risk.
