Eight NY hospitals win five-star overall quality ratings from CMS

Crain’s New York Health Pulse reports HSS is among eight hospitals in New York that received five-star ratings for overall quality from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and included commentary from Catherine MacLean, MD, PhD, chief value medical officer at HSS, as HSS has maintained a five-star rating since the program’s inception.

Star ratings are based on hospitals’ performance on measures related to mortality, safety, readmissions, patient experience and timely and effective care. The ratings were calculated using July 2021 data from CMS’ Care Compare website for hospital performance.

Dr. MacLean noted the importance of its pre-surgical screening and health optimization program, which identifies patients who face a higher risk of complications or readmission.

She said that said hospitals can improve on key quality metrics by measuring their performance regularly and sharing the results broadly, not just among leaders.

“Staff in the trenches often have great insight into performance and suggestions on how to improve it,” Dr. MacLean added.
