“Drumming healed my pain!”

FIRST reports research shows low-impact, weight-bearing activities such as drumming help strengthen bones and reduce pressure on the joints, suppressing pain from conditions like osteoarthritis.

FIRST spoke to Karen M. Sutton, MD, sports medicine surgeon at HSS, who explained, “Anytime we move our joints, we increase the lubrication in them so they glide better in our daily activities, which greatly reduces pain.” Additionally, by incorporating ab-strengthening Pilates moves into a drumming workout makes it even more impactful. “If the core is strong, less force will go on the hips and knees when you’re doing everyday tasks, which also lessens joint pain.”
