Here's How to Prevent Aching Legs and Joints on Your Next Long Flight

POPSUGAR discusses three ways to alleviate joint pain on a long flight, according to Rock G. Positano, DPM, MSc, MPH, DSc, director of the non-surgical Foot and Ankle Service at HSS.

To circulate the blood in the calf muscles, a common site for deep vein thrombosis, Dr. Positano suggested pumping the feet (as if you were to push on a gas pedal). Every hour or so, Dr. Positano advised getting up to walk the back and the front of the plan to stretch the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in lower extremities (i.e., feet, ankles and the lower back). Additionally, Dr. Positano recommended drawing figure eights with the foot and ankle to prevent stiffness in the foot and ankle joints, and to help with balance when standing up.
