All the Reasons Your Feet Are Amazing, and How to Show Yours More Love

Runner’s World reports the feet are the body’s foundation and foot ailments are often initial signs of serious medical conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, nerve and circulatory disorders, and more. According to experts, routine foot care can go a long way.

Runner’s World spoke to Rock G. Positano, DPM, MSc, MPH, DSC, director of the Non-surgical Foot and Ankle Service at HSS, who discussed the importance of wearing comfortable shoes that are fitted appropriately. Dr. Positano recommended having your feet measured every five years, as your foot size can change throughout your lifetime. “Ill-fitting shoes can cause overuse injuries as they affect the shock-absorbing capability of the foot and abnormally compress the muscles, tendons, and ligaments, leading to inflammation and swelling,” he explained.

Dr. Positano advised those who experience foot pain for more than a week to seek help from a podiatrist. “The internet has no clinical experience to make a judgment. Your health care professional does,” he cited.

Furthermore, Dr. Positano suggested taking cold water baths after runs and elevating your legs above your heart every now and then, as both habits preventatively work to reduce swelling and inflammation in the ankles, lower legs, and feet.
