Does stem cell treatment for knee osteoarthritis work? How do I know its for me?
A Nation in Motion interviewed HSS sports medicine surgeon Scott A. Rodeo, MD, on the efficacy of stem cell treatment for knee osteoarthritis.
"There is currently some limited data to suggest that stem cells can improve symptoms in knees with osteoarthritis. However, there is currently zero data to suggest that stem cells will lead to any tissue regeneration or tissue regrowth," said Dr. Rodeo.
He explained that the number of true stem cells in current sources, such as bone marrow or fat, are very small.
"This area has tremendous potential, it has great promise, but just needs further development and refinement," Dr. Rodeo concluded.
