Curious by Nature | Dr. Edward Yoon - How to "Turn Off" a Certain Type of Back Pain
In a recent episode of the Newswise Curious by Nature podcast, Edward Yoon, MD, chief of interventional radiology at HSS, explains a breakthrough treatment designed for a very specific and often overlooked type of back pain.
Dr. Yoon discusses basivertebral nerve ablation, a minimally invasive procedure that targets vertebrogenic back pain, a condition linked to inflammation in the endplates of the spine. This inflammation shows up on MRI as Modic changes, making it easier to identify who can benefit from the procedure. Unlike injections that offer temporary relief, this treatment can provide long-lasting or even permanent improvement, because the targeted nerve typically does not grow back.
