Can you lose weight without exercising, and other diet and exercise questions answered

TODAY reports on the top search engine questions people ask about diet and exercise in the new year and includes guidance from Jordan D. Metzl, MD, sports medicine physician at HSS.

Dr. Metzl explained that exercise can be part of a weight loss strategy but estimates it’s only about 30 percent of a plan that includes nutrition.

He continued that the health benefits of exercise are unbelievable. “Key benefits include improved mental health, improved cardiovascular health and lowering the risk of certain types of cancer,” he cited.

When asked what exercise burns the most calories, Dr. Metzl recommended setting up a combination of long, slow exercises with high-intensity interval training (HIIT). He demonstrated some example HIIT maneuvers, including sprinting in place, jump squats and burpees.

Dr. Metzl shared tips for exercising after having COVID-19 and explained the virus affects people differently. He advised, “Rest and conserve energy in early stages, no group indoor exercise and a slow, gradual return to activity.”
