Best Calorie-Burning Activities

Max Castrogaleas MA, CSCS, TSAC-F, EP-C, FMS, FRCms, exercise physiologist at HSS, discusses workouts and activities that burn calories and the recommended time for performance.

Castrogaleas explained the number of calories you burn depends on the duration of the activity, the intensity of the activity, and your body weight. Running is an endorphin-boosting cardio activity that is well-known for its calorie-burning potential. However, elements that can alter the number of calories burned when pounding the pavement include your location (treadmill vs. outdoors), the incline, the weather/temperature outside, your speed, and the amount of time you spend running.

Additionally, he suggested trying paddleboarding, as it works the body in ways you might not have expected – especially when standing. “Paddleboarding is going to require a lot of balance and core strength,” said Castrogaleas. “You can burn more calories by doing this activity for a longer duration. Try paddleboarding for 30-60 minutes.”

Taking the stairs is also one of the best ways to bring an element of aerobic exercise into your everyday life. “You can increase the intensity by carrying your groceries up the stairs. If you do not have groceries, then you can walk at a fast pace or run up the stairs,” noted Castrogaleas. “You can increase the duration by gradually increasing the flight of stairs. If there are not enough floors, you can turn this into a workout by continuously going up and down the stairs.”

Castrogaleas also recommended activities including sports, cycling, swimming, hiking, lawn mowing, jumping rope and high-intensity interval training (HIIT), to increase calorie burn.
