All in for New York: Q&A with Hospital for Special Surgery CEO Lou Shapiro

HealthLeaders features a Q&A with Louis A. Shapiro, president and CEO of HSS. They report that HSS went from being an orthopedic specialty hospital to a general acute care hospital to help NYC fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As the strain on the NYC healthcare system continues to grow, we recognize the need to do more and are further executing on our surge plan to use all available capacity across our system,” says Mr. Shapiro.

“The cost to the enterprise [of cutting down surgeries] is enormous, but in this environment, united we stand. We are all in, every way you could be in,” explains Mr. Shapiro.

Mr. Shapiro also praises healthcare professionals across the spectrum. “They are all heroes, number one.” He specifically calls out HSS staff members by stating “you just never, ever cease to be surprised by the commitment and passion for people we have”.
