For those looking to improve their bone strength, Jacobs said it’s possible to make swimming a better bone-building activity by performing resistance exercises in the pool using weights, swim paddles, or even a current, if the pool has that function. She also recommended adding a few strengthening exercises to the end a lap routine.

For those worried about the cold-water temperature, Jacobs explained, “As we age, our bodies become more sensitive to hot and cold temperatures.” She advised, “A proper warmup combined with targeted exercises should allow you to adapt to the temperature.”
