7 Habits Causing Your Lower Back Pain

AARP reporter Hallie Levine reports on habits that may cause lower back pain, noting that nearly half of healthy, active people over 60 experience this pain.

Joel M. Press, MD, physiatrist-in-chief at HSS, explains that seemingly innocuous habits can trigger this pain.

"The more you sit the more pressure you put on the cushioned discs between the bones in your back," says Dr. Press. If you have a desk job, get up and walk around every 30 minutes. This will help squeeze fluid out of your discs and ward off pain.

Diet can also play a role. Dr. Press explains that an anti-inflammatory diet (rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein and healthy fats) may help tamp down inflammation in the body that can worsen chronic pain.
