6 Tips for Older Runners to Stay Happy and Healthy

Dr. Metzl explained weak calves and ankles can increase the risk of injury as you age and how running creates muscle imbalances or accentuate ones that already exist. For instance, weak calves put too much stress on the Achilles and break down the fibers that make up the tendon. Unstable hip and core muscles hurt your biomechanics, overloading the shin which can lead to shin splints and stress fractures. Dr. Metzl advised to incorporate strategic strength training in your regular run routine twice a week to build lower leg strength and endurance to run well.
